Know your ground, field by field
Farm and ranch operators, foresters, and agronomists manage productive land by the acre: field boundaries, timber stands, soil types, water, and the roads and gates that reach them. Smart Site Plan brings your boundaries, USDA soils, land cover, and hydrography into one browser map so you can plan, scout, and report without a desktop GIS license or a folder of marked-up PDFs.

Real Agriculture work over Pitt County, NC, captured in the product
The old way
Acreage and field history get reconciled by re-keying numbers between a boundary program, a county soil report, and a scouting clipboard. Every soil pit, gate, or stand edge gets re-walked because last season's notes never made it onto a shared map.
With Smart Site Plan
Map every field, stand, and soil from the browser
The data, already on the map
Drawn from 20 million open datasets, one click each. No agency portal hunting, no format wrangling.
Workflows
How Agriculture work gets done
End to end, in the browser, on one map.
Build a field map from soils up
- 1. Import
Bring in your existing field boundaries from a Shapefile or GPS track, reprojecting to the map automatically.
- 2. Open Data
Add USDA NRCS SSURGO soils and the NASS Cropland Data Layer for prior-season crop cover, scoped to the farm view.
- 3. Measure
Confirm tillable acreage on each field and the partial acres lost to a waterway or treeline.
- 4. Style
Color fields by soil map unit or capability class to expose high- and low-productivity zones.
- 5. Export
Export the styled fields to GeoJSON, or to KML on Pro, for the equipment monitor or the crop record.
Run a season of crop scouting
- 1. Forms
Create a scouting form for growth stage, weed and pest pressure, and stand count.
- 2. GPS
Walk the field with live GPS so each observation lands on the right block.
- 3. Photos
Pin geotagged photos of disease, lodging, or moisture stress to exact coordinates.
- 4. Measure
Measure the affected area of each problem patch so the agronomist and operator size the prescription from the same number.
- 5. Share
Send the grower a view-only link to the scouting map.
Plan a timber harvest block
- 1. Open Data
Pull parcels, NHD streams, NWI wetlands, and contours over the tract.
- 2. Draw
Lay out the harvest block, landing, and a stream-buffer strip with live area readouts.
- 3. Measure
Check haul distance from the landing to the nearest road and the grade of each skid trail.
- 4. Export
Export the block, buffers, and access roads to DXF or KML on Pro for the logging crew.
What you can do
Bring in your field and stand boundaries
Import existing field, paddock, or timber-stand boundaries from Shapefile, GeoPackage, KML, or a GPS track, reprojecting from State Plane or UTM to a common map on the way in. Each field becomes a clean polygon you can measure, attribute, and reuse season after season.
Overlay soils and capability class
Add USDA NRCS SSURGO soils to any field and read map-unit names, drainage class, and capability class right where you farm, then style polygons by soil type to see your productivity zones at a glance. NAIP imagery and the USDA NASS Cropland Data Layer give context on prior-season crop cover and current ground conditions to sanity-check what the records claim.
Measure acreage and map water access
Get accurate, unit-aware acreage on every field, stand, or partial harvest block, and measure the distance from a gate or landing to the nearest road or stream. Draw roads, firebreaks, buffer strips, and harvest blocks with live length and area readouts so a plan is grounded in real ground.
Scout fields and stands in the field
Build custom data-collection forms for crop scouting, stand cruising, weed pressure, or pest counts, fill them on a phone with no signal, and submit when you reconnect. Geotagged photos pin disease spots, washouts, or blowdown to the exact coordinate so the office sees what you saw.
The capabilities Agriculture teams lean on
USDA soils and land cover
SSURGO soils, NASS cropland, NHD water, and NAIP imagery load straight onto the map, so you read the ground without leaving it.
Acreage and access math
Unit-aware area and distance give defensible field acreage and real haul and access distances for every block.
Offline scouting and cruising
Forms and geotagged photos work with no signal in the back forty, then sync the moment you reach coverage.
Boundaries in and out
Pull in existing field and stand boundaries, then on Pro export clean acreage as KML, Shapefile, or DXF to equipment, records, or a logging crew.
In practice
Sizing up a leased quarter section in Story County, Iowa
A consulting agronomist in Story County, Iowa, imports a grower's field boundaries from a Shapefile and adds USDA SSURGO soils, with the NASS Cropland Data Layer alongside for prior-season crop context. Measuring tillable acreage against the wet, low-capability ground near the creek shows the grower is paying rent on twelve acres that never make a crop, and a styled soil-capability map turns that into a one-page case for renegotiating the lease.
What changes
- Defensible field and stand acreage you can trust for leases, crop records, and harvest contracts
- Productivity zones drawn straight from SSURGO capability class, so input and seeding decisions follow the soil, not a guess
- Scouting notes and cruise data that reach the office the same day, geotagged and photographed
- Harvest blocks, buffers, and access roads planned against real hydrography and contours
- One shared map a grower, agronomist, and crew all read from a phone or a browser
Agriculture, answered
Yes. Import Shapefile, GeoPackage, GeoJSON, KML, GPX, or CSV, and the platform reprojects from State Plane, UTM, or any EPSG code to the map. Each layer holds up to 50,000 features, which is far more than a farm or tract of timber needs.
